Self-Directed Learning

Self-Directed learning as I see it is where it focuses on you teaching the information that the teacher provides to yourself. This strategy is very effective when it comes to math equations where the best way to learn is by doing a lot of practice/homework, whereas Teacher-Directed is where they dispense the information and you are expected to listen and take notes with what they discuss. Self-Directed is more of a hands on experience which for some students can be easier to remember. Self-Directed is the most practical for math, language Arts, and Art in itself. I think this type of learning is appropriate for all grades if used in the right context. For example in all grades with art you would have to do a more Self-Directed because you can teach the steps but in the end the student is going to be the one holding the paintbrush (or other art supplies). Technology has played a huge part in students being more involved with Self-Directed learning; it has made it so that the information is available for the students without the teachers needing to teach. Technology has made it so that we as teachers have to focus and re-direct our ways of teaching. I believe that most kids would be able to use this approach but that it wouldn’t work for all of them. Seeing’s how all students learn differently it is important that we do not just use this type of learning but incorporate many different styles so that all kids have an equal chance.
Hey Amanda!
ReplyDeleteGreat first post! I really like your references to technology and how it's changing the way we teach and learn!
Nice job!
